The Adelaide International is an annual tennis tournament held at Memorial Drive Tennis Centre. A relative newcomer to the tennis circuit, the event was founded in 2020 as part of the women's WTA 500 tour and the men's ATP 250 tour. As a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, the 2021 event was a women's-only tournament, but 2022 saw it return to its intended format, accommodating men's matches too. Whilst the inclusion of both men's and women's draws is not unusual on the professional tennis tour, the Adelaide International had previously used a unique version of the dual-event format: the competition was previously comprised of 2 combined tournaments, "Adelaide 1" and "Adelaide 2", which took place across consecutive weeks at the tournament's host venue, the Memorial Drive Tennis Club. The 2024 edition of the Adelaide International, however, saw the event change to a single week format, crowning only 4 winners (women's and men's singles and doubles), instead of the previous 8.
As well as having showcased a unique tournament format, the Adelaide International has also played an important role in the tennis calendar since the event's inception: as well as helping to start the new tennis year in style, the competition also functions as a warm-up event for the Australian Open.
The Adelaide International is primarily an outdoor event, but the main show court has a roof canopy to provide protection from the elements if required.
