The Penguins are the football team of Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio. They compete in the Football Championship Subdivision of the NCAA and play in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVFC).
Youngstown State has spent much of its history competing as an independent team, before short spells in the Mid-Continent Conference and the Ohio Valley Conference, where the Penguins won 2 and 1 conference championships respectively. In 1997, the college joined the MVFC, known as the Gateway Football Conference until 2008. The Penguins have earned 2 conference titles in the MVFC.
Youngstown State play their home games at Stambaugh Stadium, which has a capacity of 20,630.
