Wrexham AFC are a professional football club based in Wrexham, Wales. Their home venue is the Racecourse Ground, currently known as the STōK Cae Ras.
📜 Wrexham AFC History
Like many early football clubs, Wrexham AFC was formed by players from their local cricket club looking to fill the winter months with more sporting activity. They were founded in 1864; this makes them the oldest association football team in Wales, the third-oldest professional football club in the world, and the fifth-oldest football team in the world overall.
The Red Dragons briefly went out of existence in 1883 after they were expelled from the Football Association due to crowd trouble at their first appearance in the FA Cup, but they reformed the following year as Wrexham Olympic; the suffix would be dropped several years later.
Wrexham joined the Football League for the first time in 1921 as one of the founders of the Third Division. They would spend much of the 20th century operating in either the third or fourth tiers, but they would also pick up a record 23 Welsh Cups, which earned them qualification to the European Cup Winners' Cup.
They lifted the EFL Trophy in 2005, but 3 years later they would find themselves playing non-league football for the first time in 87 years.
In 2020, the club was taken over by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney as part of their Welcome to Wrexham documentary; the takeover had a transformative impact on the club's fortunes.
