The Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) World Darts Championship, known for sponsorship reasons as the Paddy Power World Darts Championship, is a year-ending festive spectacular, and one of the highlights of the international darts season! This mammoth knock-out tournament is the last of the PDC's "Triple Crown" events to be played each year, and is winning the tournament is considered the greatest achievement in professional darts. As such, it is a tournament that players and fans alike look forward to months in advance.
First established in 1994 by a small group of players who defected from the then-dominant British Darts Organisation (BDO), the competition soon overshadowed the BDO's original World Championship tournament, and today it is the de facto World Championship in the sport. It is watched by millions of viewers on TVs across the world and is attended by thousands of fans, who bring plenty of festive spirit to Alexandra Palace in London, the Championship's long-term host venue.
The World Darts Championship starts in mid-December and finishes in the new year, providing a fortnight of competitive action which includes a mixture of seeded elites and rank outsiders. The current World Darts Championship champion – and holder of the Sid Waddell trophy – is Luke Littler, who won his first world title in 2025 aged just 17.
