Since its first, unofficial, edition in 1991, which was held in Wales without the endorsement of World Rugby, the Women's Rugby World Cup has enjoyed increased stature and recognition. Rebranded without reference to gender prior to the 2021 tournament, it is now the biggest prize in international rugby union!
Despite having been played since 1991, only 3 teams have ever won the tournament: the United States won the inaugural contest, and England and New Zealand have also lifted the Rugby World Cup trophy aloft, on 2 and 6 occasions respectively. With increasingly strong sides emerging in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, however, plenty more teams will be eyeing-up the enviable title of World Cup winners, come the next instalment of this historic tournament.
The 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup is set to be held in England, across August and September. The Red Roses reached the 2021 final, but lost to then-hosts New Zealand, in a thrilling final in Auckland. Can the Black Ferns defend their title, or will the World Cup trophy find a new home?
