📜 Wigan Warriors History
Whilst a Wigan Football Club was founded in 1872, this team disbanded after less than 2 years, and it is in fact Wigan Wasps, formed 7 years later, who served as antecedents to the present day Wigan Warriors. This team, founded in 1879, began playing in cherry red and white strips in 1886, and in 1895 became founder members of the Northern Rugby Football Union, which was established following rugby's "schism" of the same year.
Wigan won its maiden First Division title in 1909, and followed it up with 3 more championships before the outbreak of World War Two. Wigan also won 2 editions of the Challenge Cup, defeating Oldham in the 1924 final, and Dewsbury in the 1929 final. The club's success continued post-war, with further titles in 1946, 1947, 1950, 1952, and 1960, and Challenge Cup wins in 1948, 1951, 1958, 1959, and 1965.
The club would not win another First Division or Challenge Cup until 1985, when it won its eighth Challenge Cup, but this victory would usher-in a period of dominance which established the side as one of the foremost powers in modern rugby league. Wigan would win 8 consecutive Challenge Cups between 1988 and 1995, and 9 First Division and Super League titles between 1987 and 1998, including 8 out of a possible 9 between 1990 and 1998. In 1997 the club formerly added "Warriors" to its official team name.
More recent successes include Super League championships in 2010, 2013, 2016, and 2018, and Challenge Cup victories in 2002, 2011, 2013, and 2022. In total, Wigan Warriors has won over 40 First Division, Super League, and Challenge Cup titles combined.
