The Mountaineers are the football team of West Virginia University (WVU). They compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision of the NCAA and play in the Big 12 Conference.
West Virginia has won 15 conference titles, all dating from before the Mountaineers joined the Big 12. The team won 8 Southern Conference titles and 7 Big East titles, the most recent coming in 2011 when they shared the Big East Championship with Cincinnati and Louisville.
The Mountaineers have contested 39 bowl games in the program's history, winning 4 in a row between 2005 and 2008. In this period, Pat White became the first ever Division I quarterback to win 4 bowl games as a starter.
West Virginia play their home games on Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium. John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads" is a theme song for the university, and it plays during every pregame show at the stadium. After every home win, players and fans link themselves arm-in-arm and sing along to the song.
