Watford are an English football club who typically operate in either the Premier League or the EFL Championship. Known as the Hornets, the club adopted its nickname in 1959 after adopting a gold and black colour scheme. The club crest also featured a hornet, however that was later changed to a hart to represent the club's location in Hertfordshire. They play their home games at Vicarage Road.
📜 Watford History
The club was founded in 1881 as Watford Rovers before becoming West Hertfordshire in 1893; in 1898, they merged with Watford St. Mary's to simply become Watford FC.
After winning several titles in the Southern League, they joined the Football League Third Division in 1920, but they were unable to replicate their success, and a period of stagnation followed until singer Elton John – a lifelong Watford fan – became the club's chairman in 1976.
That sparked a rejuvenation of the club that saw them climb to the First Division, where they finished 2nd in 1983, qualified for the UEFA Cup, and reached the FA Cup final in 1984.
The Hornets reached the FA Cup final again in 2019, but they were beaten by Manchester City.
