Wakefield Trinity is a professional rugby league club which competes in the Championship, the second tier of English rugby league's club structure. The club plays home matches at Belle Vue Stadium; its traditional home colours are blue, red, and white.
📜 Wakefield Trinity History
Wakefield Trinity was founded in 1873 by attendees of Wakefield's Holy Trinity Church, from which the club takes its name. In 1895, the club became a founder member of the Northern Rugby Football Union, following rugby's "schism" of the same year. This year was additionally significant for Trinity, as it was when the club purchased its Belle Vue ground in order to provide a permanent home for the team; Trinity has played at Belle Vue ever since.
In 1909, Wakefield Trinity won its first Challenge Cup, but it would have to wait until the post-war period to win another, which it did so in the 1946 final, with a victory over Wigan in the final. A second followed in the 1959-1960 season, before back-to-back Challenge Cup wins in the 1961-1962 and 1962-1963 seasons. Trinity's good form in the Cup eventually translated to the First Division: after grand final losses in 1960 and 1962, the club won its first championship in the 1966-1967 season, and successfully defended its title the following year.
More recently, Wakefield Trinity has largely failed to recapture the form of its illustrious 1960's side; the club gained promotion to the Super League in 1998, 2 years after the restructuring of the First Division, and became known as the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats. The Wildcats moniker was then dropped in 2016, with the club reverting back to its traditional Wakefield Trinity name. After the 2023 campaign Wakefield Trinity was relegated from the Super League after almost 25 consecutive seasons in the top flight.
