The Wildcats are the football team of Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania. They compete in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) of the NCAA and play in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA).
Villanova first fielded a football team in 1894. The Wildcats competed as an independent team until 1987, although the football program was disbanded entirely between 1981 and 1984, with lack of attendance and financial issues prompting its closure.
In 1988, Villanova joined the Yankee Conference. The team saw immediate success, winning the conference title in 1989 and 1991. The Yankee Conference was absorbed into the Atlantic 10 in 1997, and the Wildcats won a further 2 conference championships in their 9 years as A-10 members.
Along with all other A-10 schools, Villanova became a member of the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA β formerly Colonial Athletic Association) ahead of the 2007 season.
In 2009, Villanova won its first FCS national title by defeating the Montana Grizzlies in the decisive championship game.
