Verein für Leibesübungen Wolfsburg e. V. - more commonly known as VfL Wolfsburg or simply Wolfsburg - is a German professional football club based in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony and currently playing in the country's top tier Bundesliga. The club plays home games at the Volkswagen Arena.
VfL Wolfsburg is owned by Volkswagen AG which was the company that founded the city of Wolfsburg - when it was known as Stadt des KdF-Wagen - in 1938 as a community in which to host the workers who were building the first Volkswagen Beetle. To really establish the spirit of the community, the company created a club called BSG Volkswagenwerk Stadt des KdF-Wagen pre-war and then VSK Wolfsburg (soon to be known as 1. FC Wolfsburg and later VfL Wolfsburg) in 1945. The club slowly began to rise up the German football system and has played in the Bundesliga since the late 1990s. Wolfsburg won the Bundesliga in 2008/09 and have also won the DFB-Pokal and the DFL-Supercup.
