M.M. Roberts Stadium is an outdoor American football stadium located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The stadium is the home ground of the University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles college football team.
📜 History
The venue opened in 1932 under the name Faulkner Field, featuring just 1 wooden grandstand with space for 4,000 spectators. The original stadium was built by unemployed workers during the Great Depression, who did all the construction for free. In 1938, permanent concrete stands were added to the stadium and Southern Miss football players participated by hauling the concrete.
Further renovation and rebuilding projects have increased the capacity of the stands and updated all technological aspects of the stadium, such as lighting and audio/visual systems.
In 1976, the stadium was renamed from Faulkner Field to M.M. Roberts Stadium, honouring an alumnus who also served on the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning (or the College Board). Roberts was a committed segregationist who tried to stop his college's basketball team from playing against the integrated Loyola team in the 1960s.
