The United States men's football team played their first official match in 1916, although their history stretches back to an unofficial match against local rivals Canada in 1885. The Americans notably finished 3rd in the first ever FIFA World Cup back in 1930, and 2 decades later they completed one of the greatest upsets in football history by defeating England 1-0. Despite those early successes, it was not until the United States hosted the 1994 World Cup that the sport began to capture national attention in the country. Since then, football has grown increasingly popular; and while the US men's team live in the shadows of their female counterparts, they've enjoyed plenty of silverware in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
