Durham is a small city with a huge stamp on the tourist map, so while it is on the pricey side, it offers an excellent range of luxury chain and boutique hotels. Yet, as a student city too, there are also cheaper options available for those on a budget.

Most accommodation, luxury and budget, is packed into the historic and commercial hub of Durham city centre. Therefore, the city’s best shops, restaurants, and landmarks are all within a hop, skip, and a jump for those who want to experience its history, culture, and nightlife.

To get away from the bustle of the city centre, stay immediately north near Wharton Park. Whilst all the city’s attractions are just a 10 minute walk away, the area feels like it’s miles away, especially as the park is at your doorstep to provide added tranquility.

For even more peace and tranquility, consider staying on the outskirts of Durham in a more countrified setting. There’s a number of historic manor houses and spa and golf resorts awaiting to indulge you in the finer things in life.

Durham is a very walkable city, as most of its attractions are within a two kilometre radius. However, if you want to explore beyond the inner city, a car is highly recommended.
