Visiting Canterbury
Although Canterbury is surprisingly small, it is in fact one of the most historically and culturally important cities in England. It is home to Canterbury Cathedral, one of the country’s oldest and largest religious buildings, and the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, the head of the Church of England. Religious or not, thousands flock to this Gothic church each year to bask in its splendour. However, the city’s historically significant landmarks don’t stop there: as you wander within the walls of the medieval city, and along the ambling River Stour, you’ll come across ruins of monasteries and castles past, as well as beautifully preserved traditional Tudor houses and monuments. Yet Canterbury’s history actually goes all the way back to Roman times, memories of which remain in the Canterbury Roman Museum.
