The first Tour de France took place in 1903, created as a promotional campaign by L'Auto sports newspaper in a final attempt to save their failing paper. No other race had been so ambitious, including riding through the night. Out of the 60 entrants, only 21 finished, and a legacy was born.
Today, the Tour de France is the most famous cycling competition in the world, not least because of its continued gruelling feat of 21 days and 3,400km of flat, hilly, and mountain terrain.
The race attracts the world's best cyclists and they are supported by over 10m fans who line the roadsides to cheer and push the competitors onwards. It is a truly unique spectacle unlike any other.
The 2025 race will be the 112th edition of the event and will depart from Lille. It is the first time since 2020 that the race will take place solely in France.
