Tennessee State fielded its first football team in 1912. The Tigers joined the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1926, but this membership lasted just 3 years.
From 1945 until 1966, Tennessee State played in the Midwestern Conference, winning 14 conference championships during this period. The Tigers eventually moved to the Ohio Valley Conference and won conference titles in 1998 and 1999.
Tennessee State claims more than 10 Black College National Championship titles.
