Hugged by a meander in the River Aare between the towering Alps and Jura mountains, Bern is both a scenic and historic city. Bern was founded way back in the 12th-century, and since then not much has changed — physically. From the Gothic Bern Cathedral to the wondrous Zytgolgge (astronomical clock) and beyond, the city’s Old Town and UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site has frozen in time. Yet, as the capital city of one of Europe’s wealthiest countries, Bern’s mentality is very contemporary. But it’s not all about fine-dining restaurants and high-end boutiques; this student city has a hip bohemian side too.
