The Swiss national team began playing in 1905; their first and only international honour came not long after, when they earned a silver medal in the 1924 Olympic Games. While Switzerland have yet to venture into the latter stages of the FIFA World Cup, they have made history in the competition on 2 occasions. Their 7-5 defeat to Austria in 1954 – while they were hosting the tournament – remains the highest-scoring game in World Cup history, and in 2006 they became the first team to be eliminated without conceding a single goal, being defeated on penalties by Ukraine in the last 16.
