United were formed in 1898 with the merging of Sutton Guild Rovers and Sutton Association. They were initially a junior side; it was not until 1910 that they decided to become a senior team, having impressed in local competitions.
The club spent many decades playing in the Athenian League and then the Isthmian League, winning multiple league titles in each. In 1979 the club lifted the Anglo-Italian Cup, during its era as a semi-professional competition.
