Stone Temple Pilots, also known as STP and previously performing under names such as "Mighty Joe Young" and "Shirley Temple's Pussy", are a rock band from San Diego, United States. Emerging from the late‑1980s alternative scene, they blended grunge and alternative rock with classic hard rock and psychedelic influences.
The band achieved major success with their debut album "Core" in 1992, followed by "Purple", "Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop", "No. 4" and "Shangri‑La Dee Da". Signature songs include "Plush", "Sex Type Thing", "Interstate Love Song", "Vasoline", "Big Bang Baby", "Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart" and "Sour Girl". In 1994 they won a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance for "Plush".
After an initial split in the early 2000s, Stone Temple Pilots reunited for tours and new music, releasing a self‑titled album in 2010 and another self‑titled set with new vocalist Jeff Gutt in 2018, followed by the largely acoustic "Perdida" in 2020. Despite line‑up changes and the deaths of former singers Scott Weiland and Chester Bennington, the group continue to record and tour internationally.
