Stevenage FC are a professional football club based in Stevenage, England. They play their home games at the Lamex Stadium. Their nickname, the Boro, owes to the fact they were known as Stevenage Borough until 2010.
📜 Stevenage FC History
The club was founded in 1976 after the town's previous team, Stevenage Athletic, went bankrupt. It initially began as a youth team, before becoming a senior outfit in 1980.
After progressing through the United Counties Premier Division and Isthmian League to reach the Football Conference (now the National League), Stevenage won the Conference in 1996 but were denied promotion to the Football League because their ground did not meet league requirements.
The following year, the team earned a historic draw with Premier League outfit Newcastle United after progressing to the 4th round of the FA Cup; they would later go on to defeat the Magpies in the FA Cup in 2011. In 2007, the club defeated the Kidderminster Harriers at Wembley Stadium to lift the FA Trophy.
Stevenage finally reached the Football League in 2010, this time with nothing to deny them the promotion. It was at this time they dropped Borough from their name, but they retained their nickname.
