St. Kilda Football Club, known by its nickname the "Saints", is an Australian rules football club which competes in the Australian Football League (AFL). The club is based in the Melbourne suburb of St. Kilda, and also has ties to Moorabbin, which is located just south of St. Kilda. St. Kilda plays the majority of its home matches at the Marvel Stadium in Melbourne. The club's traditional home colours are red, white, and black; these colours currently adorn the club's kits in vertical stripes, but a cross pattern has also been used in the past.
St. Kilda was established in 1873 as the result of the disbanding of the South Yarra Football Club; of St. Kilda''s traditional red, white, and black home colours, the red and white came from South Yarra, whilst the black was added during the new club's formation.
In 1897, St. Kilda took part in the inaugural Victorian Football League (VFL) season along with 7 other founder teams; the VFL served as a direct forerunner to the modern-day AFL. The Saints' early involvement in the VFL may have been historic, but it wasn't immediately successful: the club failed to win a match until 1900, and finished bottom of the table 6 times in a row. In 1907, St. Kilda reached its debut finals, but was defeated by eventual premiers Carlton.
In 1913, St. Kilda competed in its first grand final, against Fitzroy. The Saints struggled to score initially, before closing the gap to just 2 points in the final quarter. Fitzroy finally pulled away however, securing a 7.14 (56) to 5.13 (43) victory against the Saints.
St. Kilda had to wait until 1965 for its second grand final appearance, which it achieved after finishing as minor premiers for the first time. The Saints were beaten more convincingly on this occasion, this time against Essendon, but made the grand final again the following year. The 1966 grand final would be played against Collingwood, and it would be third time lucky for the Saints, who would win the premiership in dramatic circumstances, 10.13 (73) to 10.14 (74).
Despite making the grand final again in 1971, 1997, 2009, and 2010, St. Kilda's 1966 premiership is their only one to date.
