π South Dakota Coyotes Football History
South Dakota fielded its first football team in 1889. Until 1921, the school competed independently, without being part of a conference.
In 1922, the Coyotes joined the North Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, where they played for more than 80 years. Ahead of the 2008 season, South Dakota joined the Great West Football Conference, moving up to Division I and the FCS for the first time in the university's history.
In 2012, South Dakota moved to the MVFC.
