The Jaguars are the football team of the University of South Alabama in Mobile. They compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the NCAA and play in the West Division of the Sun Belt Conference.
South Alabama first fielded a collegiate football team in 2009, gaining full FBS membership status in the 2013-14 season and becoming eligible to compete for the Sun Belt title. The Jaguars finished this first full season with a 6-6 record, giving the team bowl eligibility for the postseason, and they went on to play the inaugural Raycom Media Camellia Bowl against Bowling Green. Although South Alabama lost that matchup, they had already become the youngest ever FBS team to qualify for a bowl game.
The Jaguars are coached by Kane Wommack, a former defensive coordinator, and play their home games at Hancock Whitney Stadium.
