Durban Sports Events
Much of Durban sport revolves around the ocean, with sailing and surfing being popular here. Host to two marathons a year, Durbanites are evidently very athletic! Keen followers of rugby and cricket too, with the Sharks ruling the pitch at Kings Park Stadium. The prominent Moses Mabhida Stadium was built to help host the FIFA World Cup in 2010, and now is a popular venue for cricket, football, and rugby union matches.
Visiting Durban
Located on the Eastern Coast of South Africa, with a backdrop of the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean, Durban is officially the ‘greenest city of the world’. The area was named ‘Natal’ (meaning Christmas) by the Portuguese explorer Vasco de Gama, who sailed past the bay on Christmas day 1497, and is known as the KwaZulu-Natal province to this day. This is a place with a strong connection to the sea, hosting South Africa’s busiest port and a popular surfing destination thanks to its wide, golden sands in the heart of the city.
Evolving from its unique history, the city has a mix of British, African Zulu and Indian culture. Durban is a modern city to visit and provides so many tourist opportunities. Beaches, safaris, Zulu experiences, stunning scenery, and fascinating history are all abound in this wonderful coastal port.
