Sevilla are a football club playing in Spain's La Liga. Founded in 1890 by a group of British expatriates and local Spaniards, it is the country's oldest football-specific sporting club. Indeed, the club played the first-ever official football match in Spain when they faced Huelva Recreation Club that year. The club missed out on a spot in the inaugural season of La Liga in 1929 after losing a play-off with Racing Santander, but they achieved promotion to the top flight in 1934, with their first league title following 12 years later. In 1958, the club moved into the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium, named after the club's beloved late president. Although debts incurred by the stadium move caused instability that saw Sevilla relegated in 1968 and again in 1973, it remains the home of the club to this day.
In 1992, the club signed the legendary Diego Maradona from Napoli, however amid injuries and clashes with the coach, he left after just one season. The forward returned to his native Argentina, with Sevilla being his final stint in Europe.
As well as winning the Copa del Rey on multiple occasions, Sevilla have also developed a reputation in recent years as the kings of the UEFA Europa League. They lifted the trophy for the first time in 2006, and have since won it again on several occasions including 3 years running from 2014 through to 2016, and once again in 2023 when they beat Roma on penalties.
