The San Jose Earthquakes are a professional men's football team playing in Major League Soccer's Western Conference.
History
The club was founded in 1994 as the San Jose Clash, one of MLS' inaugural members, and they were renamed the Earthquakes in 1999.
At the end of the 2005 season, Anschutz Entertainment Group – who owned the club – announced their intent to move the team to Houston. That team would go onto become the Houston Dynamo, but after a 2-year hiatus the Earthquakes continued play in 2008 after the franchise and its history were purchased by Lew Wolff, co-owner of the Oakland Athletics baseball team.
The team have enjoyed sporadic success both before and after the hiatus, winning multiple MLS Cup and Supporters' Shield titles.
