San Diego Wave FC, often shortened Wave FC, is a professional women’s football club based in San Diego, California, United States. They compete in the National Women’s Soccer League, the country’s top tier of women’s football, and play home matches at Snapdragon Stadium.
Founded in June 2021 as an expansion side, Wave FC began NWSL play in 2022, becoming the first professional women’s team in San Diego since the early‑2000s San Diego Spirit. Built around high‑profile United States internationals such as Alex Morgan and Abby Dahlkemper and top draft pick Naomi Girma, the club quickly established itself as a contender, reaching the play‑offs in its inaugural season and setting new NWSL single‑match attendance records after moving into Snapdragon Stadium later that year.
In 2023 the Wave secured the NWSL Shield as regular‑season winners, the first major trophy in club history, and in 2024 they added the NWSL Challenge Cup. Subsequent seasons have brought further play‑off runs alongside significant changes in coaching staff and ownership structure, including investment from former star striker Alex Morgan and NBA player Jimmy Butler, underscoring the club’s status as a prominent modern force in women’s football.
