The San Diego Open is an ATP Challenger 100 tournament, hosted at the city's Barnes Tennis Center. First held in its current form in 1984, former winners of the Open include Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis, and Venus Williams. However, despite its illustrious honour roll, the tournament was discontinued following the 2015 edition.
Then, in 2021, due to disruption to the sporting calendar caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, the ATP announced that a single-year license would be given to an ATP 250 tournament in San Diego, officially marking a revival of the historic event. Following the success of the men's edition it was announced that the women's WTA event would subsequently return to the tour in 2022, bringing women's professional tennis back to San Diego on a more permanent basis.
The 2024 San Diego Open was won by Great Britain's Katie Boulter, who came from behind to triumph over Marta Kostyuk in 3 sets. From 2025, the event has migrated from a WTA 500 event to an ATP Challenger 100 event.
