Roland-Garros (also known by its traditional name, the French Open) is the second of the 4 Grand Slams, usually taking place in May each year in Paris, France.
The first French Championships began in 1891, and whilst the "official" French Open only started allowing international competitors in 1925, another forerunner to the modern Open, the World Hardcourt Championships, welcomed international players from 1912. In 1968 the entry requirements were opened further, when Roland-Garros became the first Grand Slam to allow "open" entry, meaning both amateur and professional players could compete on the Parisian clay. Indeed, the red clay court surface at Roland-Garros is a large part of its iconic status: it is the only Grand Slam tournament held on crushed brick, with the surface slowing the ball and creating a high bounce, resulting in possibly the most physically demanding tennis tournament in the world!
The tournament's adoption of its venue name as the tournament name pays testament to the singular status of this event, as well as the famous French aviator whose name has been lent to both – it is no surprise that thousands of fans flock to Paris each year to watch the Open in this historic venue.
