The Spiders competed independently until 1900, when they joined the Eastern Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Association (EVIAA). From 1911 to 1920, Richmond played simultaneously in the EVIAA and the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SAIAA).
After another independent spell from 1922 to 1926, the Spiders competed in the Virginia Conference and the Southern Conference between 1927 and 1975. This was followed by a further decade of independence, which ended when Richmond joined the Yankee Conference in 1986.
The Spiders played in the Atlantic 10 Conference from 1997 to 2006. Since 2007, they have competed in CAA Football.
In 2008, Richmond defeated Montana to win the FCS Championship Game. This was the first national title for the university in any sport.
