Programme Songs by Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Max Bruch, Richard Strauss, Hugo Wolf, Alexander von Zemlinsky, Alma Mahler, Robert FΓΌrstenthal, Peter Warlock, Charles Ives and Albin Fries Description The motif of the wanderer is a central theme of German Romanticism in the 19th century. During this evening of song, based on the award-winning album βFremde Heimat,β the wanderer passes through various stages: foreign countries and languages meet him on his journey, until a sense of yearning for home and return eventually enters the picture. This unfinished musical journey leads from early Romantic works by Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann, through High Romantic works by Johannes Brahms and Max Bruch, to late Romantic gems by Richard Strauss, Hugo Wolf and Alexander von Zemlinsky. The programme also offers fascinating surprises and rarities by Alma Mahler, Robert FΓΌrstenthal, Peter Warlock and Charles Ives, as well as Albin Friesβ setting of Goetheβs βΓber allen Gipfeln ist Ruh.β Salzburg baritone Rafael Fingerlos and Berlin pianist Marcus Merkel combine musical brilliance with a deep understanding of the nuances of song performance. Look forward to a moving concert evening full of poetry, longing and emotional depth.
