The Tigers are the football team of Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey. They compete in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) of the NCAA and play in the Ivy League.
📜 Princeton Tigers Football History
Princeton took part in what is commonly considered the first ever American football game. On 6 November 1869, a group of students from the College of New Jersey (as the school was then known) visited Rutgers to play a modified form of soccer. Although the rules went on to change substantially, this event marks the earliest version of the new sport.
Between 1869 and 1909, Princeton won 22 national titles and was a dominant force in the development of intercollegiate football.
The Tigers joined the Ivy League as a founding member in 1955. As the rules of the conference prohibited participation in the football post-season, Princeton faded from national title contention. The Tigers' last national title came in 1950, when Heisman winner Dick Kazmeier was a junior on the team.
