Portugal's history in major international competitions is one of stark contrast. While they've had relatively little impact at the FIFA World Cup – aside from 1966, where they finished third thanks to the legendary Eusebio – European competition is another story altogether, particularly in recent times. Having reached the semi-finals several times over the years and finishing as runners-up in 2004, Portugal earned their first international honour in 2016 when they upset hosts France to win the UEFA European Championship, and they followed that up with victory in the UEFA Nations League in 2019.
