The Portland Timbers are a professional men's football team in Major League Soccer's Western Conference.
History
The Timbers were founded in 2009 as an expansion team and joined MLS 2 years later, although the club can trace its history back to 1975, when the original Portland Timbers joined the North American Soccer League.
Their first MLS Cup triumph followed in 2015, and in 2020 they won the one-off "MLS is Back Tournament" after the league returned to action following a hiatus due to the pandemic.
Portland are known for being one of MLS' most popular franchises, selling out every home game, and for having one of the best atmospheres in the league thanks to the Timbers Army and their vocal support for the team.
The Timbers contest the Cascadia Cup with bitter regional rivals the Seattle Sounders and Vancouver Whitecaps, and mascot Timber Joey is known for using a chainsaw to cut a round from a large log every time Portland score, presenting the round to the goalscorer at the final whistle.
