Portland Thorns FC, often called simply the Thorns, are a professional women’s football club based in Portland, Oregon, United States. They compete in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), the top tier of women’s club football in the country. Founded in 2012 and beginning play in 2013, they were one of the league’s original clubs and quickly became known for large, passionate crowds and a strong connection with the city’s supporter culture.
The Thorns won the inaugural NWSL Championship in 2013, setting the tone for a period of sustained success. A core of international stars and long‑time captain Christine Sinclair helped them secure multiple major honours, including NWSL Shields for the best regular‑season record and further league titles, most notably another championship in 2017 and a third in 2022. They have also captured domestic cup and tournament trophies and regularly featured in the league’s play‑offs. Off the pitch, the club has been a central figure in wider conversations about player welfare and governance within women’s football, contributing to reforms across the NWSL.
