The Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, also known as the Stuttgart Open, is an annual women's tennis tournament, and part of the WTA 500 tour. Founded in 1978 after businessman Dieter Fischer failed to secure a men's tournament for his new tennis centre in Filderstadt, the Stuttgart Open is the oldest indoor women's tennis tournament in Europe. In 2002, luxury car manufacturer Porsche took over the tournament licence and, in 2006, the event moved to the Porsche-Arena.
With the tournament's longevity demonstrating its esteem amongst tennis fans, the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix is also popular amongst players - since 2007 it has been voted the favourite event in its category over 10 times. Part of the event's appeal among competitors may arise from the fact that, as well as collecting a trophy and significant prize money, the winners of this tournament are also rewarded with a Porsche car!
