Plymouth Argyle are a professional football club based in Plymouth, England. Their nickname, the Pilgrims, is based on the religious English settlers who departed the country from Plymouth in 1620 to the United States of America – then known as the New World – and their badge features the famous ship that took them there, the Mayflower. Since 1901, their home games have been played at the aptly-named Home Park.
📜 Plymouth Argyle History
The club was founded in 1886 and was initially known simply as Argyle FC until they added the Plymouth name upon becoming professional in 1903. The Argyle name is rumoured to have originated from local landmarks such as the Argyle Tavern or Argyle Terrace street, or even the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders army regiment who were known for their football team.
Plymouth have the rare distinction of being a club side to have played and beaten a national team; on a trip to South America in 1924, the Pilgrims played exhibition games with both Uruguay and Argentina, beating them both.
They also had the honour of beating Pele's Santos FC side during a 1973 friendly at Home Park, despite playing in the Third Division at the time.
Argyle came close to lifting their first notable silverware in 2023 when they reached the EFL Trophy final, but they were beaten by Bolton Wanderers.
