The Philadelphia 76ers and the New York Knicks were both founded in 1946, although it wasn’t until 3 years later that they first faced off, with the 76ers – then known as the Syracuse Nationals – starting life in the rival National Basketball League (NBL). After the Basketball Association of America (BAA) merged with the NBL in 1949 to become known as the NBA, the pair faced off twice that November as state rivals, with the Nationals winning both meetings.
The Nationals relocated to Philadelphia in 1963 to become the Sixers. While they’re no longer geographic rivals, they have a long history with more than 450 regular-season meetings between them. They’ve also faced off many times in the NBA Playoffs including in 1983 when the 76ers knocked the Knicks out in the Eastern Conference semifinals on their way to winning their 3rd NBA Championship.
