The Penrith Panthers are an Australian National Rugby League (NRL) side based in Penrith, a suburb of Sydney, New South Wales.
📜 Penrith Panthers History
It was in the mid-1960s that the modern-day Penrith Panthers emerged, drawing on the huge well of rugby league interest in Penrith. In 1967, the Panthers joined the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) Premiership, a forerunner of the NRL. In their debut season, the Panthers finished second-bottom of the top-flight, with fellow debutants Cronulla-Sutherland propping-up the ladder.
Indeed, the 1960s and 1970s brought little success for Penrith, but in 1985, 2 decades after their formation, the team reached the finals for the very first time. It would take another 5 years for the Panthers to appear in a grand final; they would lose-out in 1990 to the Canberra Raiders, but in 1991 they finished the regular season as minor premiers, and took revenge on the capital city side, besting the Raiders 19-12 in Sydney.
The Penrith Panthers became premiers again in 2003. In 2020 they reached another grand final, and in 2021 went one better, securing their third top-flight title.
Whilst many of the Panthers' historical home shirts have been brown and white, their predominant colours are now black, and red, yellow, and green.
