The Parramatta Eels are an Australian rugby league team based in Parramatta, a suburb of Sydney, New South Wales. They play in the National Rugby League (NRL).
📜 Parramatta Eels History
Founded in 1946 as simply "Parramatta", the club was a member of the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) Premiership - a forerunner to the NRL. They reached the finals for the first time in 1962, but it took another 14 years for them to reach their first grand final, which they lost to Manly-Warringah. They would lose again in 1977, this time to St. George, despite finishing the regular season as minor premiers.
The Eels' finally won a top-flight title in 1981, and they would defend their crown in both 1982 and 1983. They then lost the 1984 grand final, but won the premiership again in 1986. Since then, the Eels have appeared in 2 further grand finals, in 2001 and 2009.
The franchise name "Eels" was adopted in the 1960s; it was taken from an Aboriginal name for Parramatta - "Burramattagal" - which roughly translates to "place where the eels lie down". The Parramatta Eels' traditional home colours are gold and blue.
