Norway women's football team, also known as the Grasshoppers, represent Norway in international football competitions such as the FIFA Women's World Cup, Olympic Games, and the UEFA European Women's Championship.
History
Since they were established in 1978 to compete in the Nordic Championship tournament, Norway women's team have enjoyed much greater international success than their male counterparts.
In 1987, just 9 years after their formation, the Grasshoppers were crowned champions of Europe for the first time, beating local rivals Sweden in the European Championship final on their debut in the competition.
The team continued to grow in stature, reaching the inaugural World Cup final in 1991 before claiming another European title 2 years later. They finally lifted the World Cup in 1995, beating the likes of the United States and Germany along the way.
Further successes followed at the Olympics in 1996 and 2000, where they picked up bronze and gold medals respectively.
While the decades since have not been as successful, Norway remain a potent force on the world stage.
