The Mean Green are the football team of the University of North Texas in Denton. They compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the NCAA and play in the American Athletic Conference.
In 1913, North Texas State Normal College (the precursor to the University of North Texas) fielded its first football team. The Mean Green began as an independent program, but joined the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) in 1922 and remained a member until 1931.
North Texas has competed in many different conferences in the football program's history, including the Lone Star Conference, the Gulf Coast Conference, the Missouri Valley Conference, the Southland Conference, and the Big West Conference.
The Mean Green joined the Sun Belt Conference in 2001 and won 4 straight conference titles. The team then moved to Conference USA and played there from 2013 until 2022.
From the 2023 season onwards, North Texas is a member of the American Athletic Conference.
