Visiting Skopje
Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, was placed in the hands of the Byzantine, Bulgarian, Serbian, and Ottoman Empire (for 500 years) all before 1912. Throughout the 20th century, it was once again passed between Serbia, Bulgaria, and finally the former Kingdom of Yugoslavia before finally gaining its independence in 1991. Skopje may have had a turbulent history, but it has resulted in becoming one of the most culturally multifaceted cities in Europe today. While the impressive neoclassical museums surrounding Macedonia Square are filled with priceless art, artifacts, and archaeological finds from the Byzantines to the Yugoslavs, its Old Bazaar neighbourhood has very much remained in the Ottoman era. After browsing the Persian rugs and tile-printed plates, visitors can cross the grand Stone Bridge to discover the country’s unthinkable struggles with war before unwinding at a bar amongst locals and appreciating the city for the beauty that it is today.
