The Bison are the football team of North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota. They compete in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) of the NCAA and play in the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC).
📜 North Dakota State Bison Football History
North Dakota State fielded its first football team in 1894, although the team was originally known as the North Dakota Agricultural College Farmers, or the Aggies. Stanley Borleske, head coach of the team from 1919 until 1925, is credited with the change to Bison.
The Bison played in the North Central Conference from 1922 until 2003, before moving to the Great West and eventually the MVFC in 2008.
North Dakota State boasts one of the most successful FCS teams in history, with 17 national titles and more than 35 conference titles. In 2016, the Bison defeated Iowa, who were ranked 13th in the FBS. Following this result, North Dakota State were ranked 27th in the entire Division I field, setting a new record as the highest-ranked FCS team of all time.
