The Lions are the football team of the University of North Alabama (UNA) in Florence, Alabama. They compete in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) of the NCAA and play in the United Athletic Conference.
📜 North Alabama Lions Football History
The first football team at UNA played in 1912, but the program was restarted in 1949, and the Lions' considerable success has all been achieved since this rebirth.
From 1960 to 1969, UNA competed in the Alabama Collegiate Conference. Following this period, the Lions joined the Gulf South Conference, where they remained from 1970 until 2017. During this membership, UNA made history by becoming the only team to record 3 consecutive Division II national championship titles. The Lions were named champions in 1993, 1994, and 1995.
After a year as an independent school in 2018, UNA joined the Big South in 2019 and stayed for 2 seasons. The Lions played in the ASUN in 2022, but the football leagues of ASUN and the Western Athletic Conference merged in 2023, forming the United Athletic Conference (UAC).
