📜 Newcastle Knights History
Formed in 1987, the Knights joined the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) Premiership - a forerunner to the NRL - the following year. The franchise name "Knights" was chosen due to Newcastle's historic association with the steel industry. The team's top-flight tenure began positively, with tens of thousands of flans flocking to matches in their inaugural season; by the early 1990s they were appearing the year-end finals.
In 1997, amidst the "Super League War" over Australian rugby league TV rights, the Newcastle Knights became premiers for the first time. They repeated the feat 4 years later, becoming 2001 champions of the modern-day NRL.
The Knights' traditional home colours are blue and red.
