The New Zealand Breakers are a professional basketball team based in Auckland, New Zealand. They are the sole Kiwi representatives in Australia's National Basketball League (NBL) – the Singapore Slingers (who now play in the ASEAN Basketball League) are the only other non-Australian to feature in the division.
The Breakers primarily play their home games at Spark Arena, although they will sometimes play at other venues such as Christchurch's Wolfbrook Arena or the TSB Stadium in New Plymouth.
📜 New Zealand Breakers History
The New Zealand Breakers were founded as an expansion team in 2003, taking the number of clubs in the competition to 12 and broadening the league's horizons across the Tasman Sea and into a new market. Predating the Singapore Slingers by 3 years, they were the first foreign team to join the NBL.
Despite a rocky start in their early seasons, the Breakers’ fortunes drastically improved over the years, culminating in a period of dominance in the early 2010s.
Indeed, the team's golden era was highlighted by winning the NBL Championship 4 times in 5 seasons between 2011 and 2015 – becoming only the 2nd team in NBL history to win 3 consecutive titles – establishing themselves as a powerhouse in the competition.
