π New Mexico State Aggies Football History
NMSU has fielded a football team since 1893, with one of the earliest recorded games taking place against rivals New Mexico in January 1894. For the program's first 37 years, the team competed as an independent, before joining the Border Conference in 1931. Another independent spell followed, before periods in the Missouri Valley Conference, the Big West Conference, the Sun Belt Conference, and the Western Athletic Conference.
After the Western Athletic Conference went through a realignment and could no longer sponsor football as a conference sport, New Mexico State returned to independence for a season in 2013, before spending 3 years in the Sun Belt Conference. Due to the college's geographical distance from the other Sun Belt schools, however, the Aggies went independent again from the 2018 season. From 2023 onwards, New Mexico State will be a member of Conference USA.
New Mexico State claims 4 conference titles and the Aggies have played in 4 bowl games. They are one of just 3 teams never to have lost an FBS bowl game, with 3 wins and 1 tie to their name.
